Spilman announces candidacy for District 31

Bismarck, NDMorton County resident Kelly Spilman has announced she is seeking the Democratic-NPL Party’s endorsement for District 31 of the state legislature at the party’s February 7 Region 6 District Convention in Bismarck.

Our district deserves leadership that listens to people and who can focus on the issues we have in common,” Spilman said, describing her motivation for running, “and those issues are affordable living, strong schools, and restoring balance and accountability in state government.”

Spilman, now retired and having resided in Morton County for more than 30 years, credits her upbringing on their small family farm in Mobridge, S.D., for establishing her values and work ethic. “I grew up working on our farm and then began working at age 14 as a dishwasher and later at our local library, learning the values of responsibility and perseverance,” she said.

Spilman’s career spans three decades in medical sales where she traveled the central and western parts of North Dakota as she met with doctors, nurses, and pharmacists at clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies across the state, seeing firsthand the dedication of healthcare professionals serving rural communities.

I know from experience how hard work, persistence, strong public education, and affordable, accessible, post-secondary training can change lives,” she said, “because it changed mine.”

Spilman has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City.

Spilman and her husband Tim have five grown children.
