The boulevard of the State Capitol grounds drew an estimated 900-plus attendees Saturday, March 28 according to the No Kings event organizers.
A large number of protesters had already gathered by 12:45 pm before the official 1 pm start time and the crowd remained heavy and growing until the 4 pm end time.
Notably, many attendees said the the crowd was a mix of Democrats, lndependents, and Republicans.
“This event isn’t about Democrats vs. Republicans,” said one attendee. “This is a ‘No Kings’ rally – not a ‘No Republican Kings’ rally. This is about a large majority of Americans protesting the current president, regardless of what party he may be, who is constantly bypassing Congress and ignoring rulings from the Supreme Court. He starts wars, he institutes tariffs, he tears down a wing of the White House, he adds his name to the Kennedy Center, he ignores due process, he pardons convicted billionaires and millionaires who donate to him, he holds cabinet meetings where the cabinet members – including, embarrassingly, our former Governor Doug Burgum – are required to fawn over and praise him like dictators Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin require, he is monetizing the presidency for himself and his family to profit to the tune of billions, he spends millions in taxpayer dollars golfing, and he holds lavish parties with lobster and champagne for his billionaire supporters while a large majority of everyday Americans are struggling under an economy he is destroying. And, now he is trying to gerrymander states and federalize elections to institute legislation to make it harder for legitimate citizens to vote – not to protect elections, but to try to insure a favorable election win so he won’t have to face justice for the crimes he has been committing.”
Another attendee added, “And, if you walk through the crowd, there aren’t any hateful signs against Republicans or signs demanding people vote Democratic. Ninety-nine-point-nine percent of the signs are directed at Trump’s overreach and, for the two or three signs I saw today that do mention Republicans, it’s in regard to the party pandering to or failing to stand up to Trump. If you look at the makeup of the attendees, I’ve seen military veterans and I’ve seen children and teens to elderly people in their 90s. I’ve also seen people here who had been hardcore Republicans their whole lives and now they’re here protesting today. That tells you this isn’t a Democrat vs. Republican issue. This is about people who see what is happening and it’s so far outside the norm that it is scaring them that we are losing our democracy to an oligarchical dictatorship.”
