Democrats score major wins; a rebuke of Trump’s cruelty and chaos
November 5, 2025

Democrats secured key victories in several high-profile races across the country in yesterday’s elections, from New York to Virginia and New Jersey, in what party leaders are calling a “blue sweep” and the first major electoral test of President Donald Trump’s second term. The results included gubernatorial wins in New Jersey and Virginia, a historic mayoral victory in New York City, and approval of a California redistricting measure that could position Democrats to gain congressional seats in the 2026 midterms.

Democratic candidates winning ran on platforms of the everyday economic damage and overall daily suffering Trump’s statements, actions, mandates, and “policies” are causing to the vast majority of Americans.

Here are some notable Democratic wins from yesterday:

Zohran Mamdani, New York City Mayor — The 34-year-old Democratic socialist and state assembly member won the mayoral race with over 1 million votes (50.4%), defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor. The contest drove the biggest turnout in a mayoral race in more than 50 years, with more than 2 million New Yorkers casting ballots.

Mikie Sherrill, New Jersey Governor — The former Navy helicopter pilot and U.S. Representative won decisively with 56.2% of the vote to Republican Jack Ciattarelli’s 43.2%, maintaining Democratic control of the governorship.

Abigail Spanberger, Virginia Governor — The former CIA officer and U.S. Representative won with 57.5% of the vote over Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears (42.3%), becoming Virginia’s first woman governor. Spanberger ran on a platform opposing Trump’s trade wars and tariff policies that have impacted Virginia’s federal workforce.

Jay Jones, Virginia Attorney General — With votes still being counted, the Democrat appears poised to win the attorney general race over incumbent Republican Jason Miyares.

Ghazala Hashmi, Virginia Lieutenant Governor — The Democrat won election as Virginia’s lieutenant governor, completing a Democratic sweep of statewide offices in the commonwealth.

Mary Sheffield, Detroit Mayor — The Detroit City Council President won the mayoral election, becoming the first woman elected to the city’s top position.

Aftab Pureval, Cincinnati Mayor — The Democratic incumbent successfully won reelection in Ohio’s third-largest city. Vice President JD Vance’s Republican half-brother Cory Bowman suffered a humiliating defeat running against Pureval, garnering only 22% of the votes while Pureval easily won with 78%.

Andre Dickens, Atlanta Mayor — The Democratic incumbent won his reelection race in Georgia’s capital city.

Corey O’Connor, Pittsburgh Mayor — The Democrat won the race for Pittsburgh mayor, keeping the city under Democratic leadership.

Florida: City Commission Seat — In red central Florida, a Republican city commission seat was flipped to Democratic. Democratic challenger Tom Keen’s 51% of the vote so resoundly defeated incumbent Jim Gray’s 31% that it will not result in a runoff election.

Georgia Public Service Commission — Democrats flipped two seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission, defeating two Republican incumbents. Georgia’s Democratic Party chair credited Georgians who are “sick of Republicans who help corporations and billionaires enrich themselves on the backs of working people.” Georgia was also the epicenter of the election interference investigation from a recorded phone call Trump made to Georgia’s secretary of state Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes” to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justices — Voters retained liberal Supreme Court Justices David Wecht, Christine Donohue and Kevin Dougherty, extending the Democratic majority on the court to 5-2. The court has been at the center of pivotal fights over voting rights, redistricting, and elections.

California Proposition 50 — California voters approved the mid-decade congressional redistricting measure, which adopts a new congressional map that makes five districts more favorable to Democrats, potentially positioning the party to gain seats in the 2026 midterms. The proposition was in response to Trump ordering Texas to gerrymander the state with the goal of suppressing the number of Democratic voting districts.

Denver Bond Package — Denver voters approved Mayor Mike Johnston’s $950 million bond package, with all five ballot measures passing comfortably, including funding for transportation and mobility initiatives.

Mississippi Senate — Democrats flipped two seats in deep red Mississippi, splintering the party’s supermajority.
